Accessible only by a narrow footbridge, Civita di Bagnoregio is a stunning and fragile medieval hilltop village in central Italy—often called “la città che muore” (“the dying town”) due to its precarious perch atop a crumbling tuff rock plateau. Over the centuries, the village has literally lost ground, with entire structures vanishing over the cliff’s edge.
On the outer perimeter, turn a corner to find the front of a building—windows, a door, maybe even a balcony—only to realize that beyond the façade lies nothing but open sky.
We were lucky to find a stunning stone flat with a private tuff rock terrace overlooking the breathtaking Calanchi Valley. During the day, the village hummed with visiting day-trippers. But by night, we had Civita all to ourselves.
